Cosy But Not Stifling

As hot sleepers, the idea of winter flannel sheets used to repulse us. But not all flannel is created equal. Velvet Flannel is 100% brushed cotton, cut like velvet — it takes the chill out of bed without making you kick the covers off at 2am. Cosy, soft, breathable. Especially loved by women in a "particular season of life". Use with my SleepLayers™ system emailed free with every order.

What Should I Expect?

Pillowy-soft and plush with a velvety hand-feel, but breathable enough that you don't overheat. Heavier than our summer percale, lighter than the stiflingly hot flannelette you'll find in most NZ retailers.

What not to expect?
Sweaty, sauna-like warmth, the heavy shedding of cheap flannelette, or the static cling of synthetic winter sheets.

Features

  • 100% combed cotton, cut with a velvet finish
  • Luxurious 195g/6.9oz weight, substantial, not stifling
  • Sheds and balls less than standard flannelette
  • Lasts longer than standard flannelette
  • Breathable warmth - won't trap heat like sateen or rayon
  • OEKO-TEX® Certified, independently tested against 1000+ harmful substances
  • Woven in Portugal to high European standards
  • One shipment per year, last year's sold in 6 weeks
  • The Hotel Sheet's winter best-seller

"I'm in a particular season of life where hot flushes are a nightly event. Most winter sheets used to feel like a wool jumper in a sauna. Velvet Flannel was the first one that took the chill out of bed without making me throw the covers off at 2am. This is the one I sleep on at home every winter."

  • Breathable winter warmth

After sleep-testing every kind of winter sheet, we kept coming back to one. Velvet Flannel takes the chill out of bed without trapping heat like sateen, rayon, or heavy synthetic flannelette.

  • Sheds less, lasts longer

Cheap flannelette sheds, balls, and goes thin within a season. Our velvet process produces a finer, denser surface that minimises shedding and outlasts standard flannelette.

  • European quality

Woven in Portugal by a mill known for exceptional Velvet Flannel — the kind that sells for over $400 a single sheet in some countries. We import direct, so you don't pay European retail.

  • Find your perfect sleep temperature

Everyone runs different. Mix a Velvet Flannel fitted sheet with a regular cotton top sheet to dial in your Goldilocks zone — what we do for autumn and spring.

★★★★★

We were nervous about getting the Velvet Flannel sheets as my husband and I are both hot sleepers and have had some not so good experiences with synthetic winter sheets. After the usual fab customer service from Christina we decided to give them a go and we both love them. Nice and warm and cosy, no static and you never seem to get too hot. My only complaint is it's now hard to get out of bed on these cold mornings!

Why Velvet Flannel beats standard flannelette

"After years of testing in a particular season of life, I learned the trick isn't more warmth — it's the right warmth. Velvet Flannel is the only winter sheet on our bed." — Christina, Co-founder

The velvet flannel sheet is so cosy and soft but not too hot for those menopausal nights ☺️

Stephanie
  • Cheap flannelette sheds

Most flannelette sold in NZ is made cheaply which is why it sheds aggressively the first few washes, balls up, and goes super thin within a season.

  • Synthetics make you sweat

Polyester flannelette, "winter microfibre" or polar fleece sheets feel cosy in the shop but trap moisture and make you sweet. You wake up clammy at 2am.

  • Bamboo leaves you clammy

Bamboo is rayon, a human-made fibre. It wicks moisture away but holds on to 50% more moisture (sweat) than cotton. That's why it takes so long to dry on the line!

  • Heavy cotton stifles

High thread count sateen and heavy cotton flannelette trap so much heat that hot sleepers and women in menopause kick them off, then pull them up - all night.

These sheets are perfect for the South Island winter. Prior to buying them I was contemplating buying an electric blanket but that is no longer necessary. They fit my modern mattress well and I would highly recommend them. It can be hard getting out of bed on the coldest of mornings as these sheets always provide perfect warmth.

All natural fibres (not just ours) need at least three days’ rest after washing. Putting sheets straight back on the bed after washing weakens and shortens their life. This is why most people go one week on, one week off. To get the most life from any natural sheet, not just ours (including linen), add new sheets to your existing rotation.

★★★★★

These sheets are so soft and warm but not too hot! I've tried other flannel sheets before but these are so much more luxurious, smooth and velvety! Worth every penny!
