Size Guide

Sizes can vary hugely

  • Once upon a time, mattress and pillow sizes were fairly standard.
  • Today, mattress heights vary wildly and pillow dimensions differ between countries and even brands.
  • The best way to get a perfect fit is to know your own measurements.
  • Take five minutes to measure your mattress height (top of mattress to the base) and note it in your phone, along with any unusual pillowcase sizes that fit your non-standard pillows.
  • You’ll only need these details every few years, but when you need them, you really need them.

We sew to New Zealand sizes

  • We cut to New Zealand standard bed sizes and use pre-shrunk yarns.
  • Expect about 4% typical shrinkage over the life of the bedding.
  • Many cheaper sheets can experience 12-15% shrinkage.
  • We also sell standard sheets and deepbase
  • Standard (40 cm) fits mattresses up to 32 cm high with 8 cm tuck-in all round.
  • Deepbase (50 cm) fits mattresses up to 42 cm high with 8 cm tuck-in all round.
  • Knowing your mattress height (not just “Queen” or “King”) helps you choose the right depth and the sheet drop you prefer on each side and the end of the bed.

Want to go all flats? You need flat sheets, not top sheets

  • Hotels avoid fitted sheets because elastic is a common point of failure but worse, all the wear ends up on one sheet - the fitted bottom.
  • By using flat sheets, you can rotate the wear between two sheets and effectively double the life of a set.
  • The catch? Retailers usually sell top sheets that aren’t long enough to tuck end-to-end - especially on modern mattresses.
  • What you actually need are true hotel-style flat sheets, cut with extra cloth for full tuck-in.
  • We offer flat sets, and separate flat sheets. These sheets have a lot more cloth, which is why they cost a little more.

What are split sets?

  • More people now have split bottom mattresses (common with electric beds).
  • We often hear from people at home shows, that the supplied sheets feel awful (many are bamboo, which is rayon) and that if using a deepbase fitted covering both halves, one side pops off when one person moves while the other stays flat.
  • The answer? Split sets, which come with two singles on the bottom, one top sheet, and two standard pillowcases.

Expected Top Sheet Drop (reference)

The tables below show typical side drop (each side) and end drop when using our top sheets with common NZ mattress sizes. Use this alongside your mattress height to choose between Standard and Deepbase. If wanting to use flat sheets instead of fitteds, use our proper flat sheets instead - they're designed to tuck end-to-end, even on taller mattresses.
